Transitions cause Delimas

by on Mar.23, 2015, under Dave's Rants, Workout Logs

As some of you already know, I’m in the middle of moving jobs. So, my nice little 5 mile commute is now a 26 mile commute. And, it’s almost all downhill on the way to work. That means a 1200 foot gain getting home.

The Direct Route
=============

Google has me at about 2.5 hours both ways:

Now, while the ride to work would be doable to work, if I wanted a LONG ride :), getting home would be a beast. 2.5 hours of mostly climbing.

Abusing Frontrunner
===========

Another alternative would be to both bike, and use [FrontRunner](http://www.rideuta.com/mc/?page=uta-home-frontrunner). That does change things up quite a bit.

To Work
——-
The ride to work would look something like this:

Time: 36 mins

Train leaves every 30 minutes, and takes 23 minutes. So, Best case: 23 mins. Worst case: 53 mins.

Time: 15 mins

Ride Home
———

To Train

Time: 15 mins

Train again leaves every 30 mins and takes 23 mins, so: 23-53 mins travel time.

Time: 56 mins

Timings and Thoughts
===========

Total time to work: 1h 15mins to 1h 44mins
Total time home: 1h 34 mins to 2h 4 mins

My drive time to work is about 35 mins, without traffic. The ride to work would double the time, but, I’d get 45mins -> 2.h hours of riding in, which my fat belly needs.

The route home is the hard one. If I ride to work, I see a huge chance I’ll call Tammy groveling for a ride. Maybe I need an e-bike for the ride home?

Days in the Green

by on Jul.10, 2014, under Dave's Rants, Workout Logs

I thought I’d create this post to tell on myself. Since I decided to Go Green, I thought I’d call myself out when I fail . . .

How long have I been good?

Gotta get up early!

by on Jul.08, 2014, under Body Stats

I just decided to move my strength from Wendler 5/3/1 back to Crossfit. I think I’m going to start on Friday. But, to prepare, I timed my ride to the gym this morning at ~31 mins. So, changing shoes, etc, I need to call it a 40 min ride.

Giving time for a bathroom break, etc, I probably need to leave the house at 5:15 for the 6:00AM class. Crap. I may have to start setting the alarm even earlier!

Caloric Surplus Introspections

by on Mar.06, 2014, under Workout Logs

As many of you know, I have recently started trying out an online trainer, FitJerk from Fitocracy. Problem is, I seem to be doing less. And, that’s a problem.

As I was lying in bed last night, deciding not to go to the gym this morning, I started wondering why. The previous nights, I had rationalized my decisions because I was tired from late nights. And, I’ve been omitting cheats with my meal logs . . . not sure why about that either. And, not sure why I was cheating. I’ve managed liquid diets w/o issues.

So, I started thinking why. What was different now. You would think that with someone looking over my logs, I’d be embarrassed to cheat. Then it suddenly dawned on me. It is not *my* plan. If I fail, it’s his fault. And, since I have someone to blame, I can say, “fuck it”.

At least, that’s why I think I’ve been so inconsistent.

Either way, time to get back on the wagon.

Hike up Snowbird — WITH SKIS!

by on Jan.06, 2014, under 2013-2014, Workout Logs

Yes, you read it right. This morning, thanks to my new AT setup, I hiked up Snowbird on skis!

Last week, I was skiing with Tammy, and did one run on blues (Gadzoom -> Lunch Run -> Big Emma). It killed me. My thought was, why am I hiking up, then doing an easy run on my snowboard, when I could be working on my ski skills?

So, I hiked up. The last time I hiked, I found the cat track by Willbarre that made an easy climb to the top. I went straight up this time, since my skins were holding so well . . . until they weren’t.

At the top of Big Emma, about 10′ from the lip, I couldn’t get enough traction to get up it. I was stuck. So, I sat down, removed my skins, set my bindings to downhill, and then got stuck. It was too icy, and too steep for me to get my skis back on. I tried for a while, then slid down my butt about 100 yards, to try again. And fail again. By the time I could finally buckle in, I was at the top of Mid Gad. Note to self: From now on, take the cat track, so you can stop where it’s flat to remove skins.

Anyway, here are the stats . . . maybe a video to follow, if my camera worked:

First Ski Day: Hike up Snowbird! 2013-11-21

by on Nov.21, 2013, under 2013-2014, Dave's Rants, Workout Logs

Had a great hike up Snowbird this AM. Got to try out my new (used) Oakley jacket, chest mount on my go pro, and my new helmet . . . all toys worked flawlessly!

My cardio is crap — here’s the garmin info:

And, finally, here’s the video. Enjoy!

Wearing two strapons . . . I mean straps!

by on May.22, 2013, under Body Stats, Dave's Rants

This morning when I biked to work, I wanted to compare the calorie count between my Garmin Forerunner 305 + hr strap, and map my fitness, using a Polar BT strap. So, I double strapped, and here are the results.

First, there’s the route. I rode 12.86 miles, in just over an hour. For this, I trust the garmin’s measurement a bit better than the iPhone’s, which has me at 13.0 miles.

So, let’s first link to the workouts.

### Garmin Workout

Map My Fitness Workout (Sorry — Map My Fitness doesn’t have a cool embed like Garmin does.

Both contain heart rate details. Garmin clocks me with a 139 average, and 182 max. Map My Fitness doesn’t seem to have an overall average heart rate, but, it does max at 182, so, I think the sensors were pretty much the same.

So, then comes the calorie math. The Garmin, which I have had trouble with in the past for not relating the calories to my heart rate, has me at 1831 kcals. Map My Fitness comes in at just over a thousand (1037). So? Which is right?

This calculator computes my calories at 919 kcals, based on Garmin’s 139 HR average.

Doing the math here, I come up with (WARNING, Math ahead!) C = (0.6309 x H + 0.2017 x A + 0.09036 x W – 55.0969) x time / 4.184. In this equation, C is your calories burned, H is your average heart rate in bpm, A is your age in years, W is your weight in pounds, and T is the length of the exercise session in minutes. So, C = (0.6309 x 139 + 0.2017 x 44 + 0.09036 x 231 – 55.0969) x 62 / 4.184 = 924 kcals.

So, in a nutshell, Garmin’s math is again skewed . . . showing 2x the real calories burned . . . I’m not sure what they’re smoking, but they should share . . .

Not enough time . . too much mass . . . .

by on Jan.18, 2013, under Dave's Rants, Workout Logs

I’ve been having trouble keeping up with my ski log . . . . which is annoying, because I love to share my days skied . . . seems with all my hobbies, I have simply run out of time. Mondays are rehearsal . . . Tuesdays either skiing at Brighton, or beers with the guys . . . Thursdays lessons . . .wow

Anyway, this post is more about next steps . . . things I’m changing, not bitching about having a schedule full of fun things!

I’ve been dieting for a few months now with almost no results. I’ve gotten quite a bit stronger, but, the fat has gone nowhere. I was hoping to maintain a strength-centric workout, and use crossfit and/or X-Fit at my gym for cardio. But, the scale hasn’t moved. (And, it’s not all about the scale — the BF measurement hasn’t moved significantly either). So, it’s time for my least favorite four letter word: cardio (Well, it’s a four letter word to me)

I’m moving from a 2-3 day a week strength + 2-3 day a week crossfit to:

2-3 days a week of crossfit + 2-3 days a week of cardio. Plain, boring, stupid cardio. Hop on a treadmill with a book on tape cardio. Yeuch.

Also, I’m going to trim my supplements to match. I’m dropping NOS, creatine and BCAA’s, to just a protein shake in the AM, and maybe some carbs after a workout, if I’m gassed.

Hopefully that will finally make a dent in the scale . . . .

Skinned Up Alta

by on Oct.28, 2012, under 2012-2013, Workout Logs

With: Brad, Dennis, Derek, Nick, Sean

Skinned up Alta. Ate me up cardio wise. Top half of the run down was awesome. Bottom half was skinny, cat tracky, and brutal.

Near the bottom, something that “looked” like fresh pow ate my lunch. Solid ice camouflaged as powder. You can see my arms try to find balance in the video. Damn shadows 🙂

Set up this new log

Excited about the new season. First run last year was on October 7th! Now I need to get my playlist in order, and decide what “tool” I’m going to use . . . . leaning toward Mog.
